  What is a Module?

  A module generally occupies one slot in a plc chassis. The module creates an interface between the PLC processor and a foreign device that would otherwise have no way to connect to the processor.

  An example of Analog is a (Example: Thermocouple/Temperature Sensor) in the field sending an Analog input signal to the PLC thru the input module, then after the processor interprets the data it sends information to the output module to then send the signal out of the PLC to the output in the field (Example: Variable Speed Drive cooling pump).

  Other module interface examples may include, but not limited to: Displays, Bar-code readers, Scales, Modems, Robots, Printers, Indicator lights, Camera’s, (basically everything is controlled through the module before and after the Processor interprets the data). Modules may also include but are not limited to: discrete input, discrete output, analog input, analog output, communication, etc…

  Another example is a proximity/limit switch in the field sending a input signal to the PLC thru the input module, then after the processor interprets the data it sends information to the output module to then send the signal out of the PLC to the output in the field (Example RED INDICATOR LIGHT). Other module interface examples may include, but not limited to: Displays, Bar-code readers, Scales, Modems, Robots, Printers, Indicator lights, Camera’s, (basically everything is controlled through the module before and after the Processor interprets the data). Modules may also include but are not limited to: discrete input, discrete output, analog input, analog output, and communication
  

  Remember that many different models of PLC’s exist. Some may have removable/interchangeable modules while others may have fixed/permanent modules that cannot be changed or swapped around.
