Importance of Guarding against Electrostatic Discharge (ESD)

Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) refers to the sudden flow of electricity between two electrically charged objects. This sudden flow is caused by contact, an electrical short or a dielectric breakdown. The ESD occurs when two differently charged objects are brought close together.

ESD can cause electronic failure and permanent damage in the affect objects. Therefore, it is extremely important to guard against ESD.

To protect against ESD, manufacturers establish electrostatic protective areas that are free of static, avoid highly charging materials and use measures to remove static, such as grounding workers and controlling humidity.

Other methods of protecting against ESD include:

• Ensure there are no highlight charging materials near ESD sensitive electronics

• All conductive materials are grounded

• Workers are grounded

• Charge build-up on ESD sensitive electronics is prevented

• Use appropriate ESD-safe packing material

• Using conducting wrist straps and foot straps on workers to prevent voltage accumulation

• Anti-static mats
